How to choose a hair transplant surgeon
- Confirm the surgeon's credentials. Check the doctor's medical license with the local licensing board and ask about their training and how many procedures they perform each month.
- Ask who does each part of the procedure. Find out which steps the surgeon performs personally (planning the hairline, extraction, making incisions) and which are done by technicians.
- Look at many results, not a few highlights. Ask for before-and-after photos of patients with hair loss similar to yours, taken at least 12 months after surgery, in consistent lighting.
- Get a plan for the long term. A good surgeon talks about your donor supply, future loss and medical therapy, not just the first session.
- Understand the full cost. Ask for a written quote that covers grafts, follow-up visits and any medication, and be cautious of pressure to book on the spot.
Questions to ask at your consultation
- Am I a good candidate right now, or should I stabilize my hair loss first?
- How many grafts do you recommend, and how much donor supply will I have left for the future?
- FUE or FUT: which do you recommend for me, and why?
- What results should I expect at 6, 12 and 18 months?
- What medical treatments should I use before and after surgery?
The hairloss.org consultation builder turns your history, Norwood stage and goals into a brief you can bring to any of these appointments.
