How to wash a synthetic wig

Synthetic fibers are easy to care for if you treat them gently. Wash every 6 to 8 wears, or more often in hot weather.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Detangle first. Gently comb from the ends upward before it gets wet.
  2. Soak in cool water. Add a small amount of shampoo to a basin of cool water. Hot water can relax the fiber's style and cause frizz.
  3. Swish, don't scrub. Submerge the wig and move it gently for a minute or two. Clean the inside of the cap lightly with your fingertips.
  4. Rinse in clean cool water until the water runs clear.
  5. Condition the fibers (not the cap) and let it sit a few minutes, then rinse lightly.
  6. Blot dry. Press the wig in a towel. Never wring or twist it.
  7. Air dry on a stand away from heat and direct sun. Don't brush while wet; comb once fully dry.

FAQ

Can I use regular shampoo on a synthetic wig?

A gentle, sulfate-free shampoo works in a pinch, but products made for synthetic fibers help keep them soft and reduce frizz.

How do I fix a frizzy synthetic wig?

A wig conditioner and gentle detangling help. Heat-friendly fibers can be steamed carefully; standard synthetic fibers can be damaged permanently by heat.
